Notes from the Underworld

An actual note passed to the stage at one of our gigs! I do believe this one is from the Junior Ranks Club Mess at CFB Comox, probably around 1973. This seemed to be the practice back in the day: if you as an audience member in a nightclub or beer parlor had a request for a song, or some action for the band to embark on, standard procedure involved dispatching a hastily-scrawled note to the stage, and the band (it was hoped) would immediately comply. On the Sparkling Apple Website, therefore, is a NOTES page, displaying a collection of these sort of critical missives. To our credit, I must admit, the majority of the notes were of the “Turn It Down” variety — something Ted Nugent would definitely encourage!

Now of course, not ALL “notes sent to the stage” were collected — on the contrary, some notes were a lot more abusive, insulting and what is now considered politcally incorrect than the note shown above! Bartenders were fond of supplying us with racist, sexist and just plain nasty communications, in a vain attempt to show us just how much they loved their jobs, which for the most part consisted of dealing with inebriated bar patrons while an equally inebriated live band performed music as loud as their instruments and patrons could handle.

By the way, friends & neighbours… we encourage you to leave comments on our blog, and the easy way to do that is to click on the name of the post title; this will open a different page that looks exactly the same (the same only different!), except that at the bottom of the page is the heading “LEAVE A REPLY”. Here you will find a form where you can type in your name and comment.

To use the name of an actual band:, OK – GO!
